Invisalign® Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a revolutionary orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth and improves your bite with a series of clear plastic aligners. Your removable aligners fit snugly over your smile and gradually push your teeth into alignment, giving you a perfect smile in as little as nine months.

Invisalign’s convenience and effectiveness have quickly made it a popular alternative to traditional metal braces – over six million people and counting has chosen to improve their smile with Invisalign.

Some Invisalign patients have had braces in the past. If your teeth have shifted since your braces treatment, Invisalign offers a much more convenient way to realign your smile.

What conditions does Invisalign treat?

Invisalign treats many of the same conditions as traditional metal braces, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth
  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite

Many people also choose to use Invisalign for more minor cosmetic purposes, like generally straightening their teeth.

Why is Invisalign better than braces?

When it comes to straightening your smile, Invisalign’s state-of-the-art system of clear plastic aligners has a number of advantages over traditional metal braces, such as:

Comfort

Made from smooth, flexible, polyurethane plastic, Invisalign aligners won’t tear up the inside of your mouth, unlike the sharp, rigid wires and brackets of braces.

Convenience

You can remove your aligners, which means you don’t have to change your diet during treatment or learn any special techniques to keep your mouth clean. You simply take out your aligner whenever you eat, brush, or floss, and put them back in when you’re done!

Discretion

Many people hesitate to get braces because they don’t want to endure that mouthful-of-metal look. With Invisalign, however, your clear aligners virtually disappear when you put them on your teeth, enabling you to straighten your smile without anybody knowing that you’re getting orthodontic treatment.

How do I get started with Invisalign?

Dr. Yerabollu first uses dental impressions at Prime Family Dentistry to create an impression of your smile. Although taking a dental impression is entirely painless, Dr. Yerabollu can give you nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to alleviate any anxiety you might have about the process. That impression is manipulated to create a roadmap of all the necessary steps that your smile needs to take to move into proper alignment.

Each of those steps turns into a set of clear plastic aligners – one aligner each for your top and bottom arch of teeth. You wear an aligner all day, every day, taking it out only to brush, floss, and eat. As you wear your aligner, it exerts a tiny-yet-constant amount of pressure that progressively pushes your teeth closer to your target alignment.

You move on to the next aligner in your series every two weeks until you finally arrive at your beautiful dream smile.
